Dominion Can Designs
Overview
Dominion City is a local craft brewery that takes pride in their image as friendly neighbours, frequently collaborating with other local businesses, and appealing to Canadian millennials who value community. Dominion City was looking to expand their brand and loyal customer base.
I designed and illustrated 2 fictional labels for new products that would increase community engagement and sales. I also followed this up with a YouTube ad and a cut down Instagram Post to reach target audiences.
Concept
I found two great stories associated with local businesses to inspire the can designs as part of collaborations between the brands. Then, I was inspired by modern halftone designs and bright colours which went into the early mood board.
Sketching
I developed multiple black and white sketches for each can design to be presented to the client. Once the client came to a decision, I further developed the sketches into vector art using a template for the proper can size. I often printed tests to check for legibility and how the design would wrap around the can. After more rounds of revisions, including LCBO guideline checks, the designs were complete.
3D Workflow
All product animations, textures, particles, and lighting were custom made in Blender. I initially used a lot of complex 3D camera movements. As the project progressed, I developed an even quicker workflow, rendering static camera scenes, then moving them in a 2D space in After Effects.
Animation
Both the YouTube and Instagram ads were created in a hybrid workflow that included 3D animation in Blender, and 2D text in After Effects. During production, I created low-fidelity animations for client check-ins. Once animation had been finalized, I rendered the 3D file in high-quality and brought it into After Effects for final touches.
Final Applications
The vibrant illustrative labels and campaign ads matched Dominion City's young and outspoken image. The mix of bubbly and realistic 3D animation paired with the simple bold text also perfectly appeals to Dominion City's millennial target audience.
